Shirah Neumann(b. 1984, Los Angeles

I understand time as multi-layered and the present as perceived through the context of all that has past. In my practice I observe precedents, references, and ideas that are evoked each day and include these elements in my paintings to capture the feeling of a complex experience.

My paintings often begin with the landscape that I inhabit and develop over the course of months in my studio, undergoing many stages. I am influenced by reading, listening and observation, and writing and I incorporate these elements of my contemporary experience as well as the bounty of an immeasurable history to visually describe my impressions of time.

I am moved and inspired by the resounding energy of works by abstract Tantric artists and the vibrancy of life within Indian miniature paintings, the emotive complexity of Anselm Kiefer, the residual history and fleeting nature of Wabi Sabi, and the poetic enfolded all-presentness revealed through the films of Andrei Tarkovsky and Akira Kurosawa.  I similarly aspire for my paintings to resonate for me with the particular feeling that inspired them. It is the process of achieving this resolution that drives my work )
